1971 Bathurst Holden Torana LC GTR XU1 Colin Bond

After victory with the Holden Monaro GTS350 at Bathurst in 1969, Holden decided in 1970 to entrust its motor racing future to the new six cylinder Holden Torana. The LC range of Torana's were introduced in October 1969 and included a sports variant called GTR.
Harry Firth had turned the standard production Monaro GTS350 into a successful race car for Holden. Harry had to put aside ideas for an evolution version of the Monaro, having now been entrusted by Holden to develop a "special" version of the GTR for competition purposes.
The Bathurst race for 1971 would prove the superiority of Ford and Allan Moffat to all as he literally took control of the event. His first pit stop saw him one lap ahead of the second place getter, the private GT-HO entry of Phil Barnes. The best of the XU-1's was Colin Bond with a 'Class D' win in fourth place, with Peter Brock coming home third in class and eighth outright.
It had however been a real charge to the finish, with the second to ninth placed cars all completing 129 laps to Moffat's 130 laps. The giant-killing Toranas had not been disgraced, for they had taken the fight to the finish, and won the 'Manchamps' for the year along with events like the Sandown 250 and the Toby Lee 100.
