The launch of the mighty day-glow Holden Dealer Team VK Commodores in late-1984 coincided with the final days of the Group C touring car category that had served Australia for the previous 11 years. The factory-backed team built two brand new cars for the last few races of the season, wheeling out the impressive red and white cars for the first of the major endurance events at Sandown for the Castrol 500 which formed round three of the Australian Endurance Championship. Brock and Perkins finished a lap clear of the Allan Moffat/Gregg Hansford Mazda RX7 with the second HDT car of Harvey/Parsons two laps down in third. The win was Perkins’ first in the race but both men and their team had eyes on an even grander prize in a month’s time at Bathurst …
