1980 Bathurst Winner Brock/Richards VC Commodore

The start to 1980 looked grim for the Holden Dealer Team (HDT) following the announcement form Holden in December ’79 that it was withdrawing from motor sport
Before the announcement, Peter Brock and the HDT Team Manager, John Sheppard, were developing a prototype racing Commodore but after the announcement Sheppard resigned leaving Brock needing new sponsors and a change to the team structure quickly.
Fortunately, he secured a handful of sponsors and went directly to the Holden Dealers for support, getting 56 to commit with the promise of a ‘Brock Limited Edition Commodore’ that they could sell to the public.
The developmental head-start on the new car looked to be an advantage when Brock / Richards qualified to start the 1980 Bathurst race in the second row of the grid.
Brock stayed with the front runners until an incident saw him spend time in the pits but a determined Brock fought back from 10th position and was leading the race by lap 50.
Brock handed the car over to Jim Richards on lap 57 and the remainder of the race was smooth sailing and resulted in the pair’s third consecutive Bathurst win.
It was also a special race as it was the new VC Commodore’s maiden Bathurst victory.
